California law protects the relationship between a client and a psychotherapist, and information cannot be disclosed without written permission.
There are exceptions:
- In the event of suspected child abuse, dependent adult or elder abuse, I am required by law to report this immediately to the appropriate authorities.
- In the event of a threat by the client of serious bodily harm to another person, I must notify the police and inform the intended victim.
- In the event of threat of intended harm by a client to himself or herself, I will make every effort to enlist their cooperation to ensure their safety. If they cannot cooperate voluntarily, I may take further measures available to me by law in order to ensure their safety.
